Mumbai, a city known for its diverse culture, rich history, and vibrant communities, holds within its heart a lesser-known but equally significant part of its heritage—the Jewish community. The Jewish Heritage Tour in Mumbai offers an incredible opportunity to explore the deep and fascinating roots of Jews in India, offering a unique glimpse into a story of resilience, tradition, and community. My experience on this tour in 2023 was nothing short of eye-opening, as I walked through history, discovering the legacy of Jewish families who have shaped the city’s culture and contributed to its growth in countless ways. 

The tour starts at the magnificent Gateway of India, a place that symbolizes Mumbai's historical importance as a port city. From here, we were led by a knowledgeable guide who shared stories of the Jewish community’s journey in India, tracing their origins from the ancient times to their flourishing role in modern Mumbai. I was surprised to learn that Jews have been living in India for over 2,000 years, with three main Jewish communities—the Bene Israel, the Baghdadi Jews, and the Cochin Jews—each with their distinct customs and history. The Bene Israel, who are the largest group in Mumbai, arrived in India shipwrecked off the coast of Maharashtra around 2,000 years ago. Their assimilation into Indian society, while maintaining their Jewish identity, is a testament to the harmonious coexistence between different communities in the country. 

The first stop on the tour was the Magen David Synagogue, a beautiful and serene structure nestled in the heart of Byculla. The synagogue, built in the early 19th century, exudes an old-world charm with its stained-glass windows, intricately carved wooden pews, and a large, ornate menorah that fills the space with light. As we stepped inside, the cool interior provided a stark contrast to the Mumbai heat, and I was instantly enveloped in a peaceful silence. Our guide explained how the synagogue played a central role in the lives of Mumbai’s Jewish community, especially during the times when they were more tightly knit. The synagogue is still used for worship today, and though not as crowded as in its heyday, it remains a symbol of Jewish heritage in Mumbai. 

Next, we visited the Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue, located in the bustling neighborhood of Kala Ghoda. This synagogue is one of Mumbai’s most architecturally striking landmarks. Built in 1884 by the Baghdadi Jews, its blue-and-white facade stands out against the colonial-era buildings surrounding it. The interior is equally breathtaking, with a high ceiling, beautiful chandeliers, and intricate designs on the walls. The synagogue’s grandeur, coupled with its peaceful atmosphere, made it a standout on the tour. As we stood there, listening to the stories of the Jewish community’s past, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of the history within the walls. The synagogue, though quiet today, once rang with prayers and communal gatherings, and it was humbling to be there. 

One of the most touching parts of the Jewish Heritage Tour was the visit to the Jewish Cemetery in the region of Marine Lines. This well-maintained, tranquil space is a final resting place for many members of Mumbai’s Jewish community, with gravestones that date back over a century. Some of the tombs are simple, while others are grand monuments to those who made lasting contributions to the city. Our guide shared personal stories of Jewish families, many of whom were prominent in Mumbai’s business, cultural, and social spheres. It was sobering to walk through the cemetery, reflecting on the contributions and sacrifices of the Jewish community in shaping Mumbai. 

As we continued our exploration, we walked through the bustling streets of Byculla, where the remnants of a once-thriving Jewish neighborhood can still be felt. Here, the guide pointed out old Jewish-owned businesses, such as the Bene Israel Bakery, where I had the chance to sample traditional Jewish bread, a simple yet delicious part of the community’s culinary heritage. The Jewish community in Mumbai has always been known for its warmth and hospitality, and the bakeries and eateries that once lined the streets of Byculla were a testament to that. 

The tour also delved into the social contributions of the Jewish community, particularly in education and philanthropy. We visited the Jewish Girls’ School and learned about the pioneering work done by Jewish women in education. The community’s commitment to preserving their traditions, language (Hebrew), and culture while contributing to Mumbai’s cosmopolitan nature was evident at every stop. The Jewish schools and institutions have played a crucial role in shaping the city’s education landscape, and it was inspiring to learn about their impact. 

What stood out to me during the tour was the sense of community that still exists among Mumbai’s Jewish residents. Though the numbers have dwindled in recent years, with many families having emigrated to Israel or other parts of the world, there is still a tight-knit group of Jews who gather regularly for religious ceremonies, cultural events, and social causes. I had the chance to meet a few members of the community, who shared their experiences of growing up in Mumbai and their connection to the city’s rich Jewish heritage. Their warmth, openness, and sense of belonging were palpable, making the history of the Jewish community feel alive and vibrant. 

The Jewish Heritage Tour ended at the Chabad House in Colaba, a place of welcome and spiritual refuge for Jews from all over the world. The house, which also serves as a community center, was a place where visitors from across the globe could connect with the Jewish community in Mumbai, learn about their traditions, and experience the hospitality that the community is known for. I felt a sense of fulfillment as the tour concluded, knowing that I had just experienced something unique—an exploration of a community that has shaped Mumbai in more ways than one, yet remains largely hidden to the casual observer. 

The Jewish Heritage Tour is a must-do for anyone visiting Mumbai. It offers an enriching journey through history, culture, and spirituality, highlighting the lesser-known but incredibly significant role of the Jewish community in the city’s growth. The tour is not just about exploring synagogues and cemeteries; it’s about understanding the stories of people who have lived, loved, and contributed to Mumbai in ways that often go unrecognized. My experience was a 10/10—one that I will carry with me as a reminder of Mumbai’s remarkable diversity and rich cultural heritage.
