Tucked away in the serene and historical Byculla area of Mumbai, the Bhau Daji Lad Museum is one of the city’s most underrated gems. I had been hearing about Bhau Daji Lad Museum for quite some time, but it wasn’t until recently that I decided to pay a visit. Located in the Byculla East area, the museum is housed in a heritage building that was originally established in 1855 as the Victoria and Albert Museum to promote the arts and crafts of Mumbai. Later renamed in honor of the renowned philanthropist, Bhau Daji Lad, it continues to serve as a museum of cultural heritage, offering a deep dive into Mumbai's colonial history, local craftsmanship, and the evolving cultural landscape of the city. 

The museum’s façade is a beautiful example of Victorian-era architecture, with intricate carvings and grand columns that reflect the historical importance of the building. As I stepped inside, I was immediately enveloped in a calm, inviting atmosphere. The museum is not overwhelmingly large, but it’s filled with treasures that transport you to another time. The spacious, well-lit halls give you the feeling of walking through a time capsule, where every exhibit tells a story of Mumbai’s cultural journey. 

The first section I explored was dedicated to Mumbai's history and urban development. The exhibits here took me through the city’s transformation from a group of islands to the bustling metropolis it is today. These historical pieces showed the challenges Mumbai faced as it evolved and became the economic and cultural hub it is today. 

One of the most striking exhibits in this section was a large, detailed model of 19th-century Mumbai. The model, with its intricate representation of buildings, roads, and landmarks, was a showstopper. It was fascinating to see how Mumbai looked more than a century ago—how different yet familiar the city seemed. The meticulous craftsmanship of the model allowed me to appreciate the scale and ambition with which the city’s early infrastructure was planned. It made me reflect on the city’s remarkable growth and the sacrifices made along the way. 

The museum also has a remarkable collection of traditional Indian crafts and artifacts.
